#1 Climb the Nautilus Lookout Tower
First on your list at Owl Creek Landing is the Nautilus Lookout Tower—a one-of-a-kind, 65-foot structure nestled among the trees. Access the top of the open-air tower by walking up the seven-foot wide, fully accessible ramp. The spiral walkway’s gradual incline will be complemented by themed stopping points throughout the ascent, where you can learn about native trees and wildlife species while also taking a break. For a more active experience, you can reach the top by climbing up one of the interior staircases. In fact, stair running is great for a cardio workout.
The observation tower is a unique way to experience the beauty of the surrounding 38-acre wooded area. In addition to its stunning views, the tower is also an architectural marvel. Built using a sustainable construction system inspired by European parks, the minimally invasive design mimics the root system of a tree.
#2 Slide Down the Longest Spiral Slide in the U.S.
To make the most of your day at Owl Creek Landing, don’t miss the Nautilus Lookout Tower slide—the longest spiral slide in the U.S.! At over 170 feet from start to finish, the stainless-steel slide spirals through the tower’s core. The slide’s upper section features Plexiglass panels that allow sunlight to stream in as you zip downward, adding to the excitement. A felted wool mat (provided by Owl Creek Landing) provides a smooth, fast ride. The slide provides an unforgettable ride that truly elevates your adventure.
To ride the slide, purchase a ticket in advance or onsite at Owl Creek Landing’s entrance or the tower’s top deck.
#3 Explore the Canopy Walk
Owl Creek Landing provides multiple ways to enjoy the beauty of the wooded area. To experience what it’s like to see the trees at a higher level, take the Treetop Trail Canopy Walk—a half mile of suspended wooden pathways that soar 30 to 40 feet above the forest floor. Meander through the treetops to experience a peaceful, immersive connection to nature. Roped fencing ensures a safe and secure adventure, even for those who aren’t seasoned thrill-seekers. Access the Canopy Walk from the fourth level of the Nautilus Lookout Tower. Almost half of the walk is wheelchair-accessible, and an exit notifies you where it is no longer accessible.
The Canopy Walk leads to four themed treehouses designed for kids and families, which is our activity #4.
#4 Play in the Children’s Treehouse Village
Take a short walk on the Canopy Walk, and you’ll find four themed treehouses specially designed as interactive play areas for children as young as two—and for everyone who is a kid at heart. The treehouses, which are connected by netted walkways, spark creativity in this playful environment where little explorers can immerse themselves in nature. The design seamlessly integrates imaginative play, allowing children to explore in an engaging setting. With inviting spaces to run, play and imagine, the treehouses enhance the overall experience in this sky-high forest village.
#5 Stroll the Scenic Ground Trails
Take a leisurely stroll along Owl Creek Landing’s mile-long network of trails. The walking paths weave through the forest below the Treetop Trail Canopy Walk and next to the Nautilus Lookout Tower, so you can watch the fun from the ground. These wheelchair- and stroller-friendly trails provide the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in nature, whether you want to unwind or spot local wildlife in the peaceful forest. Along the way, you can take in the area’s beauty at your own pace. To extend your visit, pack a picnic and enjoy a relaxing break amidst the natural surroundings, making this experience both peaceful and rejuvenating.
The trails also conveniently connect to nearby attractions like The Adventure Park at Virginia Aquarium and the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, allowing you to easily extend your exploration and make the most of your visit to this unique outdoor destination.
